Voting

OK, I just registered to vote in Virginia.  This will hose my taxes, but instead of voting absentee in a state that will go blue anyway, I have a chance to make a difference with my vote.

Of course, I have no idea who I'm going to vote FOR.  Whoever gets elected will inheirit a big old steaming bag of shit, courtesy the Shrub, so in a way I feel like another Republican should have to deal with that.  But I can't face 4 more years of Republican appointments, let alone everything else.  So which of the Democrats do I saddle with the cleanup?  I'm leaning toward Obama, but minorities in America have been handed bags of shit for centuries and it might be nice to break with tradition.

And there's no way I'm voting for Hillary.  It's bad enough selecting a president from a wide open field of two candidates; let's not make it a wide open field of two families.

Hugs proportional representation

I don't know how you guys do it. If I had an either/or I think my head would explode.

Your post has reminded me that I need to remind North Carolina that I'm voting absentee. It's either that, or not vote. Although maybe I could register in New Mexico since I have my driver's license from there and I'll be "living" there for a few months this year.

I'm so with you on the Hillary thing. I turned 18 three weeks before George Bush Sr. was inaugurated. If Hillary is a two-term president, I'll be 46 before we get someone who's not a Bush or Clinton in office (and that's assuming the Bushes don't find someone else by then, and, heck, Chelsea should be constitutionally old enough by then). That's a pretty big chunk of lifetime under presidents from two families.

I'll vote for Hillary in the general if she's the nominee because I care more about getting a Democrat into office than my dynastic scruples. But I hope it doesn't come to that. At the rate we're going, it WILL be Chelsea vs. George P. in 16 years or so, and I just don't want to go there.

Exactly. If my Democratic choice is Hillary, that's how I'll vote. And someday I guess I'll vote for Chelsea.

Yeah, the dynastic thing seriously bugs. I'm an Edwards woman, personally.

Truth is, I'd vote for Hillary before I'd vote for Obama. I'm honestly not convinced I could talk my finger into pushing the yes button for that guy. Every red alert DEW instinct I've got goes flaming dayglo orange when he opens his mouth.

DEW?

My problem with him is that with Hillary claiming the moderate ground, he's gone farther and farther left...into territory I'm not comfortable with, like Fortress America. I guess if my choice is A) invade random countries and kill lots of people using a mercenary army, or B) isolationism, I'll take B. But I'd rather take C) engage in global forums and treaties and trade.

DEW = Distant Early Warning. Letting me know there's something dangerous out there, wanting in.

He lost me with his first public appearance on the national stage, with that "WE worship an AWESOME god in the BLUE states, neener!" Shtick. I don't worship any god in any state of any colour, and you know what, this country is at least partially founded on the fact that I don't have to. I did not appreciate being redlined on national telly, especially by a black man, who damned well ought to know just how fucked up redlining is, if anyone does.

He hasn't done a damned thing since to convince me isn't dangerous (like you, I'm uncomfortable with what I perceive as his extreme stance stuff).

perzactly wrt the steaming bag, but I for one would like to know a little bit more about what the contents are. I think we're more likely to get a real assessment of what's in the bag if the Dems win. Plus, so. tired. of. the. appointments. And the chest-pounding self-righteousness (that is supposed to cover up the sound of toe-tapping, I guess). Not that the Dems are angels, by any means, but another 4 years will give all that is self-righteous a lot more room to play.
