Word Usage Subcommittee, So Near And Yet So Far panel.

I got an email today at work requesting applicants for a training program. "We'll cast the net wide at first, then window down the candidates."

OK. Aside from the mixed metaphor, "window down" ?!?! Was that supposed to be "winnow out" or "pare down" or just simple "defenestrate?"

I'm also using one of the new embassy mousepads, screened with an image of an archaeologically important artifact. The text reads "The Phaistos Disk inscription is comprised of 45 unique symbols."

I've been told the fight about "comprises/is composed of" is over, and we lost. Just like the "further/farther" fight is over. What do my good readers think? Is this another "irregardless?"

Next up: "Next door" or "next store" : Who has a next-store neighbor?
