Today has totally sucked for me.  The only good news is that Robert isn't in the first traunch of 50 draftees to Iraq...but of course, now that this direct assigning has started, it will probably become status quo.  And when we invade Iran, we'll need hundreds of more diplomats...since the Bush administration likes to put embassies in war zones, so it can pretend there's no war.

Anyway, yes, very good news for us, but the rest of the day blew.  And I got home to discover that someone stole our huge pumpkin - that's not a prank, jackholes, that's just theft.  So now I'm disinclined to do our big trick-or-treat thing.  Fuck 'em.  We used to give out 65-80 bags of candy each Halloween, so we laid in 100 this year, but without the graveyard and effects we probably won't get that many kids.

Maybe I'll order pizza and tip the deliverator in candy.

Anyway, I hope everyone else's Halloween is super fabulous!

I'm glad you got the good news about Robert. But I hope your pumpkin was colonized by ants that bit the heck out of the thieves. What schmucks.

Juan Cole has blogged about the injustice being done to American Foreign Service workers and their families:

So it's not going unnoticed.

I told you a while back that I considered you and Robert to two of the best people I could imagine for the job of convincing people in other countries that we USAns are not all psychotic.

That opinion hasn't changed. But no matter how good you are, I seriously don't think there is anything that you or Robert (or Mal, bless him) can do to convince anyone in Iraq that our government isn't playing Colonialism II: Electric Boogaloo in the Fertile Crescent.

Stay safe, my beloved friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Who the fuck steals a PUMPKIN? I mean, it's not like it has a street value.

I'm glad your guy's not in the first batch, but it must still be pretty nerve-wracking. Um, has he thought about taking up another career? Could be a good plan if the US *does* invade Iran. On the bright side, I don't think they're organised enough to do it. I mean, I'm not even American, and I'm by no means an expert on military stuff (although Rumsfeld & Co. seem even more ignorant than me), but from the news it seems like they're having a pretty hard time just keeping the lid on Iraq. Tough to make Tehran a war zone with an embassy if you don't ahve the troops. And if they go t he easy way and just drop a thermonuclear bomb on it, there won't be an embassy left for the Foreign Service to staff.

What can I say? I'm a glass is half full type of person.
